Fall Vehicle Maintenance Tips
Cooler weather is a sign to get your vehicle’s Fall maintenance done. Here are some suggestions of things to check over this time of year.
Windshield Wipers
Take a quick look and make sure you aren’t in need of fresh wiper blades after the scorching summer sun.
Lights
Do a walkaround your vehicle and visually inspect all the lights are functioning. Something as simple as a new bulb or fuse can keep you safe on the road.
Tires
As you do your walk around inspection of the lights you should also take a quick look at your tires. Check the tread depth is still sufficient; look for debris or damage to the tires and check they are inflated to the proper pressure.
Battery
Colder weather can place a strain on older batteries causing them to lose voltage overnight. Batteries generally have a lifespan of 3-5 years; if you think yours is getting older, most mechanic shops & auto parts stores will test them for free for you.
Fluid Levels
Do a check under the hood to be sure all your fluids have been topped off to the appropriate levels. The heat of the summer can cause some of these fluids to burn or breakdown faster and cause the levels to drop. Brake fluid, transmission fluid, radiator fluid, even windshield wiper fluid, are all vital to keeping your vehicle running at peak performance and safety.
Belts & Hoses
While you’re already under the hood take a quick look at your belts & hoses to make sure they’re all still in good condition. Warning signs you might want to have a mechanic take a look at are cracks, wear spots, fraying, splitting, leaking & squeaking etc.
Oil
Make sure you have been & continue to get your oil & filter changed per your vehicle manufacturer manual. The heat of the engine combined with a sweltering summer can cause the oil to breakdown faster leaving sludge/residue behind in your vehicle’s engine impacting both fuel economy and engine operation.
Heat
Do a quick test run and make sure your vehicle’s heating system is working properly. You don’t want to wait until the temperature drops to find out there’s an issue that needs to be resolved!
Follow these tips and you'll be all set to take advantage of the scenic drives this time of year!
